As of this coming weekend, a new small version (1.1) of OmmWriter is available to all Mac users. In short, this version is mostly a technical improvement sprinkled with a couple of smaller feature elaborations that we thought might be helpful to you as we keep moving forward. Here’s a quick-view with explanations.
I — Main improvements
** OmmWriter is ready for the Retina screen:
The previous version hit a snag on the Retina. The artwork has now been updated to look good again on high-resolution screens.
** OmmWriter has a character counter:
Bridging a small gap and adding very little distraction, the word counter now has a new friend. Simply click on the number in the word count feature on your screen to switch between word and character.
** OmmWriter has an improved automatic backup feature:
When we first built OmmWriter, it had a emergency backup feature to help with unexpected crashes. To make good use of what started, we improved this behind the scenes helper. Every two minutes, OmmWriter now checks what you put in the text box and saves the changes in individual backup files. The backup files are saved and managed automatically unless you decide to delete any files manually. OmmWriter saves 60 files and names them from OmmWriterBackup0.omm to OmmWriterBackup59.omm where OmmWriterBackup0.omm is always the very latest backup that’s been made. If no files are deleted manually before this number of files has been reached, the oldest file, OmmWriterBackup59.omm, will be deleted automatically. You can access these files by moving you cursor to the top of your OmmWriter screen and find the hidden menu. Here you select File and Show Backups.
II — Other improvements and changes
** OmmWriter is compatible with the latest version of Growl.
** OmmWriter has smoother Chromotherapy backgrounds.
** OmmWriter now works better with Mountain Lion dictation.
** OmmWriter has been tweaked in a long list of ways:
Behind the scenes we’ve made things run, slightly but still, smoother both for you and for us in the future.
** OmmWriter offers animated font only on the regular Mac screens:
On the new high resolution Retina screens the animated font has become a regular font that looks the same as before but without the animation feature.
III — Thank you all
That’s it this time around. You’ve sent us lots of feedback for quite a long time now. We’ve read every single email and collected pieces from Twitter and Facebook, and all of it has gone into our users suggestions list. We want to use our resources smartly in a way that still serves you. The app world changes quickly, and keeping our eye on the future, the changes made are the ones that have made the most sense at this point in time.
We’re happy with this step, and are looking ahead into the future of OmmWriter.

NOTE ON THE DOWNLOAD FOR WEBSITE VERSION USERS
If you’ve gotten OmmWriter from our website, an email will be sent to the email address you provided when you first registered for OmmWriter. The emails are going out this week so it should be with you by the end of this week. Please double check your spam folder just in case.
Scenario 1 – If you by the end of the week have still not received an email, please email hello@ommwriter.com and we’ll help from there. If you’re emailing us about missing update emails and you are a Dana II user who wants the update for Dana II, please include your license information in the email you send us. If you don’t have the original license email, then go to the hidden top menu in OmmWriter, locate the license option, and paste the info you have there into the email. To activate the hidden menu in OmmWriter, move your cursor to the top of the screen.
Scenario 2 — If you have already received an email and are finding no link to the download the Dana II version, please go to the top of the email message and find any options to “Download/Display images in email”.

I simply adore your app, but it is missing one small feature that would make it just perfect for me. I would love for it to have a small timer that counts down. As a freelance writer, sometimes I need to keep track of my deadlines, as sometimes I only have a few hours to get my work in. Thanks.

Hy, yes, How do I update (literally, it’s not in iTunes/ Appstore, and there does not seem to be an update button anywhere in the ipad or on the mac versions :)
After downloading I got this message: “The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items”. I can’t seem to find an answer to what to do now? Anyone? Ommwriter? I love my Ommwriter but need some help here. Thanks.
For all those asking about how to update, try displaying the images in your email, and you’ll see the link directing you to the download page for the new version.
For those that downloaded the app directly from the website (and not through iTunes), it looks like if you go to the original download link in the registration email you got and redownload and install it, it will be the newest version.

Still unsure how to download the update from the Mac App Store. Software update doesn’t show the latest version. I could download it from your site, but it’s asking for a donation. I believe I already paid for it. Unless you’re charging for this update…
And, since we’re making requests, the only real request I would ask for is basic Bold and Italic formatting. Just to give some structure to my writing. I’d take just Bold if you were only willing to compromise on one thing!

I do almost all my writing in Ommwriter. When it first came on the scene it was a godsend and the first of its kind. I have never found a better option. Thanks team! Looking forward to all your evolutions as they come; I believe in your artistic direction.
P.S. – For those who are asking for a clock and a timer, I suggest a simple solution of using an outside timer such as a phone, watch, wall clock or such. Egg timers work nicely and cut right through the headphones.

I just opened the app on my iPad3 for the first time since updating. It opened to the last document I created. I can’t get to any menus and the keyboard will not open.
I am also not seeing the Mac App Store version as having been updated yet. Did get a download email, though.
Didn’t read far enough. But, I hope you get the invisible keyboard fixed soon.

When you download from our page now after this blog post, you have the newest version.
Whenever a new version is available, you’ll receive an email.
If you buy it in the App Store, your app will tell you that there is an update.
