If you have downloaded V2 Beta of Ommwriter, you may have problems opening your Ommwriter files that were previously created using V1. We have encountered cases where the file just will not open, or in some cases, display your file with special characters, even in Chinese, literally. No, we have not implemented a Chinese translator in Ommwriter yet.
What happened?
Ommwriter V2 now uses UTF-8 to encode its saved files. Depending on your system, Ommwriter V1 may have used a different encoding. If you get gibberish text (oops) when trying to open your V1 generated files on V2, try the following.
The workaround
1. rename your file from .omm to .txt
2. open the file in TextEdit.
3. select all (+A), and copy (+C).
4. open OmmWriter V2
5. paste (+v) or right click on TextView and choose paste.
6. save the file.
Your file will now be saved as utf-8, and will show up properly in Ommwriter V2.
You should not have problems if you create, save and open files using V2.

i just updated to v2 beta, but the one text i openend in v2 and displayed in chinese, stayed in chinese, even after renaming and opening in text edit. So i tried to open it in v1 beta, but it’s broke. Is there any chance to fix this?

Thanks for the grate software.
I downloaded and started to use OmmWriter 2 days ago and just fall in love with it.
But I found a drawback of the software.
I am Japanese, so I am typing in Japanese with an “Input Method”, which takes key press events and convert them into Japanese transparently.
On OmmWriter, I could type Japanese charactors only without the typing sound. If I turn off Japanese IM, I could hear the nice, meditating voice from the key. I’d like to hear them everytime I type in.
While the IM’s capability of “stealing” key-in event is an OS feature in Mac, you could do the typing sound on IM-enabled environments like Japanese, Chinese, Korean, etc., I think.
Thanks! The workaround worked perfectly! Cheers!
This workaround didn’t work for me. My carefully considered blog post is still in Chinese characters. I tried running it through Google translator but all I got was english nonsense – not what I wrote. I really like the idea of tOmmwriter and was enjoying using it, but if this serious problem can’t be fixed I won’t be able to trust it – or use it – anymore and could not recommend it to others. Please tell me you’ve figured out how to retrieve my writing and that you’ve fixed whatever made this happen! Thanks in advance for your help.
Wow, this sucks. Incredibly lame.
My file from v1 got opened on v2 and saved… There has to be a 1 to 1 mapping to get it back. Would be awesome if you would figure it out… I will forever sing your praises.
The workaround should work fine for all, recoverable with f.ex. textwrangler or something. I must admit I stopped using ommwriter f.ex. because of this, so maybe i should go back to the last beta ?
Your software is still the best WRITER out there!
Hello!
Im Russian and am using this beautiful program for my creative work. Brilliant font appearing feature with english font. As if it appears on the paper. I love it! but unfurtunately there isn’t an option that could do the same with any other font rather than that one.
I’d love to see that feature enabled for Russian fonts, if possible at all.
And also: if you need help in localisation of the app, let me know via email.
Maybe there should be a clear bold sentence on the blog post stating that “you should NOT open your current files in V2 before doing the described process.” If you do, the new autosave feature will save the garbled file to UTF-8, making it impossible to recover.
Great website , love the design. Seriously considering migrating to this cms now!
I want to start blogging too, what do you think, which blog cms is good for beginner?
